Second Beach
I made this image on a gorgeous late summer morning this year. This is Second Beach in the Olympic National Park. One of the most picturesque locations on the rugged Washington coast, the beach sits on the Pacific Ocean and is bookended by breathtaking sea stacks (on the north and south ends). From the trailhead, access to the beach is a short hike through secondary rainforest. A bit steep on the way down and definitely steeper on the way out. Especially if you’re lugging a backpack full of camera and hiking gear. 😉
And yes, there is a First Beach. And a Third Beach.
Sichuan Landscape
I made this exposure on the drive from Yajiang to Kangding. I like it because the dramatic light accentuates the dry, desolate terrain that is typical of this part of the Sichuan high country.
長城 (The Great Wall)
I guess that no first trip to Beijing would be complete without a visit to the Great Wall. It was a nice autumn day as we left Beijing. When we got to about half way, it started to sprinkle. By the time we got to Badaling (八达岭), it was pouring. We got ponchos from the enterprising vendors at the gate, tromped around a bit at the top, then decided to pack it in. Terrible weather? Yes. But also fortuitous as it allowed me to make this exposure with the rain and mist billowing across the wall. Many thanks to Lu Tao for driving us around, and for seeing to our other activities!
Tree Abstract
I made this image several weeks ago, when Duane and I hiked out to the coast. It was perfectly sunny at the trailhead, but as we got closer and closer to our destination, it began to fog up. Seriously fog up; we were socked in by the time we could hear the ocean. I made this image about 1/4 mile from the water. We’re looking straight up into the moss-covered boughs, backlit by “the world’s largest lightbox”, as Art Wolf is fond of saying.
Thanks again for the great companionship, Duane!

The View from Sunrise
Y’s parents are spending the summer in Seattle. Yesterday, we made a trip up the mountain. It was a gorgeous day.

Olympic Gold
I shot this profile of the Olympic Mountains on a gorgeous afternoon on Whidbey Island, a couple of hours before Sunset at High Tide. It had been cold and gray when I left Seattle but as I headed north, fortune smiled upon me.
