Market After Dark

All-Way Crossing

All-Way Crossing

So I’ve been playing with this gizmo called a Sony NEX-7. One of the things that I’m especially interested in is how it performs in low light…how the images look when shot at high ISOs. Last night, after dinner, the rain finally let up. I made a quick trip to the Pike Place Public Market and got in some shots of the place as it appears after hours (those of you who have visited Seattle have probably seen it in it’s crowded daytime glory so this is a somewhat stark contrast 😉 ).

Photo Notes
All images were made with the Sony 18-55 kit lens, shot mostly wide open. What stunned me was how great the JPGs looked, right out of the camera. Nonetheless, I decided to process the RAW files in Lightroom, to see how things could be pushed and pulled. For these first three  images, I applied a minimum of processing, mostly mimicking how they looked when they came out of the camera.

I was more heavy-handed with Chef. A tough scene to meter, I had underexposed it quite severely when I shot it. I thus applied an additional stop of exposure in processing. As is to be expected, the dark areas came out somewhat noisy, but Lightroom did a reasonable job in clearing it up (I tend to favor putting up with noise over losing detail).

Super Moon Rise

Super Full Moon

Tonight, the moon was the closest it’s been to Earth in 18 years. Dubbed “super full moon” by scientists and journalists alike, I was intrigued and wanted to see how much larger and brighter it would appear. Stationed myself by the water in West Seattle and got this image as it rose above the port. It was a good night to be out.

Beijing at Night

with 2 comments

These are a couple images that I made while wandering around the Sanlitun area in Beijing. The first is of one of the famous ring roads (3rd, in this case). I shot this on the third night of National Day Golden Week, so traffic was fairly light, allowing me capture the Chinese characters (出口 – exit) in the roadway.

This second image is of the Yashow Clothing Market. A haggler’s paradise, this is where you can get everything from knockoff Guccis to infamous Red Army hats to jade amulets. Sanlitun is the nightlife and embassy district so even though it was Golden Week, the place was hopping.

Shanghai Night

Self-indulgent Shanghai Nightscape

I did quite a bit of running around in Shanghai and didn’t really do much shooting. We did, however, have drinks/dinner at the top of Three on the Bund so here it is: my self-indulgent PuxiPudong nightscape.

Eric – thanks again for taking us around. I owe you (or is it that you owe me?) a return trip to catch the dancers at dusk.

Darkness and Light

I shot these a couple of nights ago in Sanlitun (三里屯), currently one of the hottest food-bar-shopping areas in Beijing. These images are dedicated to bro Chris and pal Cal, who have been with me through darkness and light.
