Olympic National Park, 2012

Olympic National Park, 2012

I shot this on the hike out to Second Beach with Sai and Ed last year. We were behind schedule and were hustling a bit but when the light from the setting sun cut through the mist and trees, stopping was a no-brainer.

Second Beach, Olympic National Park, 2012

Second Beach, Olympic National Park, 2012

I made this image earlier this summer, on a trip out to the Olympic National Park with Sai and Ed. On this day, we had planned to get to the beach with plenty of time to set up for sunset. But, as luck would have it, it turned out to be one of those typical Northwest ends-of-the-day, with a thick band of clouds obliterating the horizon. I made it onto the beach just in time to catch this scene, with the rays of the sinking sun illuminating the ribbon of clouds that had come sweeping down the coastline.

Hoh Rainforest, 2012

Hoh Rainforest, 2012

I made this image several weeks ago on a trip to the Olympic National Park. This was a path through the Hoh Rainforest, a national treasure with enormous, jaw-dropping stands of magnificent moss-covered old growth.

Swept Away

Swept Away

I made this image at Ruby Beach in the Olympic National Park. This body of water is the Pacific Ocean. And over there – waaay over there – behind the setting sun – lies Southern Russia  and Northern Japan.

It was quickly approaching sundown when I got to the trailhead. I opted to leave some of the gear (including the rubber boots) in the car. The part of the beach where I made this image is quite flat. The wash carries a long way and moves pretty quickly. I was pleased with some of the wave action that I was able to capture. But tromping back to the car in soggy socks and waterlogged hiking boots wasn’t real fun.  😉

Second Beach

I made this image on a gorgeous late summer morning this year. This is Second Beach in the Olympic National Park. One of the most picturesque locations on the rugged Washington coast, the beach sits on the Pacific Ocean and is bookended by breathtaking sea stacks (on the north and south ends). From the trailhead, access to the beach is a short hike through secondary rainforest. A bit steep on the way down and definitely steeper on the way out. Especially if you’re lugging a backpack full of camera and hiking gear. 😉

And yes, there is a First Beach. And a Third Beach.
