From the middle of the creek. Thank goodness for insulated, waterproof boots. 😉

Puget Sound from Magnolia, 2013

Puget Sound from Magnolia, 2013

It has been one of those typical Seattle winter days. Liquid sunshine had come down all day long, sometimes pelting, sometimes a mere mist. Then, just before sundown, it cleared. I got about 20 minutes to make some images before it started again.

Foggy Puget Sound, 2013

Foggy Puget Sound, 2013

On Sunday, the fog that had shrouded the region for days lifted long enough for us to enjoy a couple of hours of clear skies and a pleasant sunset. About an hour after I made this image, we were engulfed again.

Skagit Bay Twilight

Skagit Bay, 2013

Skagit Bay, 2013

Yesterday, we’d gone out to the Skagit River to see the bald eagles. But the combination of patchy light and freezing weather kept them high in the trees, making for a rather disappointing outing. On the way home, we made a “maybe we can salvage the trip” detour through Fir Island to try to catch some snow geese. No luck either. But nonetheless, mother nature was generous with us.

Thank you, Sai, for accompanying me on my oft-nutty adventures!

Olympic National Park, 2012

Olympic National Park, 2012

I shot this on the hike out to Second Beach with Sai and Ed last year. We were behind schedule and were hustling a bit but when the light from the setting sun cut through the mist and trees, stopping was a no-brainer.

Second Beach, Olympic National Park, 2012

Second Beach, Olympic National Park, 2012

I made this image earlier this summer, on a trip out to the Olympic National Park with Sai and Ed. On this day, we had planned to get to the beach with plenty of time to set up for sunset. But, as luck would have it, it turned out to be one of those typical Northwest ends-of-the-day, with a thick band of clouds obliterating the horizon. I made it onto the beach just in time to catch this scene, with the rays of the sinking sun illuminating the ribbon of clouds that had come sweeping down the coastline.

4/5 second at f/13, ISO 200. Nikon D800E + Nikkor AF-S 24-120mm f/4.

Red Barn, Eastern Washington, 2012

Red Barn, Eastern Washington, 2012

Been a long time. Family matters bring me back to Asia and it feels a bit odd, but here’s one from the archives, made some 4 months and 16 time zones away…

I made this image in summer just outside Uniontown in Eastern Washington. Ed and I were on our way home from the weekend shoot, still marveling at the broad bands of light and shadow that lazily drift over the Palouse when we drove past this lush field of green…and lo and behold…a picture-perfect red barn. It was obvious that the owners didn’t want trespassers traipsing through the delicate wheat so we stuck to the public areas, absorbing the beauty and making a few images.

Hoh Rainforest, 2012

Hoh Rainforest, 2012

I made this image several weeks ago on a trip to the Olympic National Park. This was a path through the Hoh Rainforest, a national treasure with enormous, jaw-dropping stands of magnificent moss-covered old growth.

1/100 second at f/4, ISO 800. Nikon D800E + Nikkor AF-S 24-120mm f/4.
