Red Barn, Eastern Washington, 2012

Red Barn, Eastern Washington, 2012

Been a long time. Family matters bring me back to Asia and it feels a bit odd, but here’s one from the archives, made some 4 months and 16 time zones away…

I made this image in summer just outside Uniontown in Eastern Washington. Ed and I were on our way home from the weekend shoot, still marveling at the broad bands of light and shadow that lazily drift over the Palouse when we drove past this lush field of green…and lo and behold…a picture-perfect red barn. It was obvious that the owners didn’t want trespassers traipsing through the delicate wheat so we stuck to the public areas, absorbing the beauty and making a few images.

1/800 second at f/8, ISO 100. Nikon D800E + Nikkor AF-S 24-120mm f/4.

Wheat Fields, The Palouse, 2012

Wheat Fields, The Palouse, 2012

We watched, mesmerized, as the puffy clouds slowly billowed across the sky, covering the rich, undulating landscape in ever-changing patterns of shadow and light.

Palouse in the Rain

Palouse in the Rain

Palouse in the Rain

A steady rain greeted us the evening that we arrived on the Palouse. When I made this image, the camera was all wet, save for the front element (which I took great pains to keep dry because a wet front = the end of the clicking 😉 ).

Thanks so much to Ryan McGinty, who took time from his weekend to guide and shoot with us.
