Into The Zone

Into The Zone

I made this image last week, during a hot, steamy day in Singapore. It was probably the hottest day that week and I found the mugginess to be extremely uncomfortable. But I now miss it.

Sunset on Marina Bay, Singapore

Sunset on the Bay

I’m home, after a very quick two weeks in China and Singapore. Getting to see family and friends is always a special treat. A special “Thank You!” is due to Bernard, Cal, Chris, Daniel, Dennis, Eric, Hock How, Ivan, Ivory, Jes, Kam, Lucy, Michael, Pete, Siew Peng and Viv. Thank you for taking time out of your busy lives to meet with me, eat with me, drink with me, shoot with me, sing with me and just chill with me. I miss you already. And very big “Thank You!” is also due to Yui, who took care of my life here while I was away. This photo is for you.

Fishing in Fire

Fishing in Fire

Fishing in Fire

Great Blue Herons love to fish when the sun goes down. I made this exposure on an evening when the pink-orange-red rays of the rapidly-descending sun reflected off the low-lying clouds, setting the water on fire. With this image, I chose to keep the shutter open a little longer to capture a bit of motion blur in the water. At the same time, I was able to keep focus on the subject because these majestic creatures will stand still for minutes on end, waiting for just the right time to pounce.

Sky On Fire

This is the afterglow from tonight’s sunset. I was lucky to have been out and about. What you see is what I saw. No digital monkey business has been applied. Sometimes, Mother Nature is just so perfect.

Dusk Falls

Continuing the theme of abstracts, here is an image that I made earlier this year. As the title indicates, I shot this during that special time when day turns to night.

I made this image at Ruby Beach on Thursday evening. I had taken the day off to go fishing with friends Geoff and Clint, leaving Seattle at 2 a.m. in order to make it to the boat (in Westport) by 5. We got back to the harbor at 5 p.m., leaving me 3 hours to make the 130-something miles up to Ruby. Needless to say, I was dog tired when I got there. But as soon as I hit the beach, the fatigue disappeared.

We had a scorcher of a day. 95 degrees, a new record according to the National Weather Service. Without a cloud in the sky, I headed to the Edmonds pier to try some water abstracts. It is salmon season and the fish are running, so both pier and water were packed with fishermen. Here is a pair, trolling in a nice old skiff.

And The Gray Came Swept In, Gobbling Up The Day

A couple of weeks ago, I made it out to the ocean on a nice afternoon, hoping to catch the sunset. But as that time approached, the clouds – the kind that envelope everything from the horizon and up – blew in. Ahh, such is (weather) life in the Northwest!
