Seasons Greetings Seattle Style, 2011 Edition

Seasons Greetings Seattle Style, 2011 Edition

I made this image this evening at the International Fountain at the Seattle Center. This time of year, the center comes alive with festive activities such as the seasonal ice rink and the Nutcracker ballet. But the synchronized-to-music fountain continues to be a major draw with kids (of all ages), who laugh and giggle as they play chicken in the unpredictable spray.

Photog Notes
I shot this with the D300 set at ISO 200. To capture the motion of the water, I set the shutter at 20 seconds, with the aperture at f/16. This long shutter speed also allowed me to isolate the fountain and Christmas tree from the children who were running in and out of path of the water.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays, everyone!

Winter Night, Shanghai

Shanghai Winter Nightscape

Shanghai Winter Nightscape

I made this exposure from my hotel room in the Jingan District of Shanghai during my trip in February. Shanghai winter nights are usually foggy-hazy-dewy but I was lucky on this particular evening. I was even more lucky to have the company that I had on the trip. Family and old friends Bernard, Cal, Chris, Pete, Sam and Tim all made it over. Thanks also to local hosts Eric, ML and TS. What a crew! What a time!

Super Moon Rise

Super Full Moon

Tonight, the moon was the closest it’s been to Earth in 18 years. Dubbed “super full moon” by scientists and journalists alike, I was intrigued and wanted to see how much larger and brighter it would appear. Stationed myself by the water in West Seattle and got this image as it rose above the port. It was a good night to be out.

Self-indulgent Shanghai Nightscape

I did quite a bit of running around in Shanghai and didn’t really do much shooting. We did, however, have drinks/dinner at the top of Three on the Bund so here it is: my self-indulgent PuxiPudong nightscape.

Eric – thanks again for taking us around. I owe you (or is it that you owe me?) a return trip to catch the dancers at dusk.

Darkness and Light

I shot these a couple of nights ago in Sanlitun (三里屯), currently one of the hottest food-bar-shopping areas in Beijing. These images are dedicated to bro Chris and pal Cal, who have been with me through darkness and light.

Star Light, Star Bright

We left town at ~10:30. I-90 seemed unusually busy, even past Issaquah. Made our way to Rattlesnake Lake (exit 32, ~4 miles S). Seemed like a great idea until we got to the lake. It was packed! Cars parked on both sides of the street for 1/2, maybe 3/4 mile. So we went further, to Hyak on Snoqualmie Pass. Found an open area with a decent Northeastern view and even here, we were far from alone. Must have been 10-12 other vehicles, with about twice as many driving through during the 1-1/2 hours we were there.

The meteor show was not as spectacular as predicted – we saw about 15. However there were 2 that were truly wonderul. Large and bright with nice long tails, it was not hard to imagine the intense crackling-burning as they hurled through the atmosphere. The glow from one even lit up some close low-lying clouds.

But the highlight of the night was surely the sky itself. With no moon in sight, the celestial superstars had come out to play. I found the white glittering band that bisected the sky – the Milky Way – the most spectacular. Duane, who does a fair amount of backcountry camping, said that he has not seen such an amazing show in years.

We were blessed last night.
