Self-Portrait in Acrylic

Self-Portrait in Acrylic

Shanghai – Chengdu – Kunming – Shangri-la – Lijiang – Shanghai in 11 days. Wow, what a trip. I caught a cold in Shanghai, an auspicious start that was followed with a bit of altitude sickness in Shangri-la. But all the while, the company was great. I got to see lots, do lots, accomplish lots. Caught the holidaying crowds in a festive Lijiang on Duanwujie, strolled down a Chengdu boulevard where the entire street smelled like Ma La (Sichuan hot pepper) cooking, had dinner and drinks with a celebrity hairdresser in Kunming, even got to belt a few at a Tibetan-style KTV in Shangri-la.

But by the end, I was glad to be heading back. To the quiet and tranquility and solitude of my special space; to the safety and steadfastness of the rock of my life. Ask me in a couple of weeks and I’ll probably tell you that I’m ready to go again. But for now, nothing beats being home.

Winter Afterglow

Winter Afterglow

Winter Afterglow

I made this image earlier this year, under the skies of a brilliant Winter afterglow. Actually, this was more of a prelude to the afterglow proper- a couple of minutes after I made the exposure, the sky and water absolutely caught fire. But I prefer the mellow pinks, blues and violets of this image.

20110217 Diary Entry: Beat

I’d been working double shifts since getting back from my trip in Fall. By the time today rolled around, I was feeling beat up – both mentally and physically. Usually, the stress disappears the moment I get past the hassle of check-in. But not today. I am still toiling with the cold that seemed to have plagued me for weeks and as usual, have left too much to be done at the end. Nonetheless, I felt compelled to make some images as this is, after all, my home airport. I wandered around a bit with little luck and finally came upon this bank of payphones. The light was just right, so I plopped myself down and began to become inconspicuous.

I made this image on a gorgeous sunny afternoon this past weekend. Shot from one of Seattle’s steep bluffs, it features an iconic Washington State Ferry as it plies it’s way across the shimmering waters of the Puget Sound. In the rear are the cliffs and hills of neighboring islands. It is scenes and days like this that make the seemingly interminable gray-wet-cold winter months more tolerable.

Sky On Fire

This is the afterglow from tonight’s sunset. I was lucky to have been out and about. What you see is what I saw. No digital monkey business has been applied. Sometimes, Mother Nature is just so perfect.
