Fishing in Fire

Fishing in Fire

Great Blue Herons love to fish when the sun goes down. I made this exposure on an evening when the pink-orange-red rays of the rapidly-descending sun reflected off the low-lying clouds, setting the water on fire. With this image, I chose to keep the shutter open a little longer to capture a bit of motion blur in the water. At the same time, I was able to keep focus on the subject because these majestic creatures will stand still for minutes on end, waiting for just the right time to pounce.

We had a scorcher of a day. 95 degrees, a new record according to the National Weather Service. Without a cloud in the sky, I headed to the Edmonds pier to try some water abstracts. It is salmon season and the fish are running, so both pier and water were packed with fishermen. Here is a pair, trolling in a nice old skiff.
