The Way I See It

A Veterans Day Tribute

with 4 comments

This is my Veterans Day tribute to the brave men and women who have served, and to those who continue to give so much so that we may enjoy the freedoms and way of life that we take for granted. This post is especially for Lani, whose grandchildren stand watch so that we don’t have to. Thank you!

What making images at the Evergreen Washelli Memorial Park, my eyes were drawn to this tribute atop a grave marker in the veterans section. Lewis Albanese was born in Venice (Italy) and was KIA in Vietnam while serving his adopted country. For his sacrifice in combat, he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor. The black marble plaque behind his grave marker reads, “For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk of his life and beyond the call of duty”. Here is the rest of the citation.

I made this image at Minneapolis – St. Paul International. While waiting for my flight, a group of veterans disembarked at the gate at which I was waiting. I snapped this as a young man – probably 22 at most – walked by. He seemed fine and fit as a fiddle until one looked down, for in place of one calf was a bare metal prosthetic.
